Would you Like Some ... Homemade Bath Salts?

My sister sent me some great home-made bath salts for my birthday, and it inspired me.  I did a bit of googling, and it’s not hard at all!  They’re cheap, easy, and fast … and are so nice to treat yourself with, or to have as gifts.  I just made some grapefruit ones for a gift swap.  The only expensive part is essential oils, which have so many helpful uses (and last forever) that I can’t recommend them enough! I’m a sucker for the citrusy scents especially, and use many as part of my health arsenal.  Peppermint settles the stomach, tea tree kills germs, lemon and eucalyptus are great for chest congestion, and I could go on and on, but, without further ado, here’s the quick recipe!

Homemade Bath Salts

  • 2c. Epsom Salts or Sea Salt, or a combo in whatever ratio you want. (draws out toxins, softens the water)
  • 1-2 t. baking soda (softens skin)
  • 10-12 drops of essential oil.
Lavender is relaxing, peppermint energizing, lemon/tangerine/grapefruit are fun pick-me-ups, and eucalyptus is really good for soothing sore throats and coughs.

Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl, pour into a glass jar with a tight lid, and decorate if you wish!

When I’m in a hurry, I just dump in a cup or so of epsom salts right into the water, stir in a few drops of essential oils, and toss in my kids :).  If you got that route and you’ve got sensitive skin at all, it’s best to stir the essential oil into a tablespoon or so of a carrier oil (like olive or apricot kernel, grapeseed, sesame, avocado, etc) and stirring well before adding to the water.  Some essential oils can cause irritation if applied directly to the skin.
